Training Devices: Boeing and L3 Communications

USM, Inc. was contracted by Boeing and L3 Communications, Link Simulation & Training to design and fabricate a suite of 1:1 scale F/A-22 maintenance and pilot training device mockups to train maintenance technicians how to operate and maintain various systems of the aircraft as well as teaching pilots how to fly the aircraft. The operations and maintenance training mockups and cockpit trainers consisted of the following devices:

F/A-22 Landing Gear maintenance Trainer (LGT). This dynamic operation and maintenance training mockup of the F/A-22 fuselage incorporates a replicated fully functional hydraulically actuated main and nose landing gear, replicated fully functional in flight refueling receptacle, high detailed replication of the ECS and other aircraft system components. The device is used to train and certify aircraft maintainers and technicians on operation and repair procedures for the aircraft landing gear system.
F/A-22 Armament Maintenance Trainer (AT). This dynamic operation and maintenance training mockup of the F/A-22 mid fuselage incorporates high fidelity functional replications of hydraulically and electrically actuated weapons bay doors, missile launchers, bomb racks, wing pylons, and gun assemblies. The device is used to train and certify aircraft maintainers and technicians on the proper weapon loading procedures as well as repair tasks for the aircraft armament systems.
F/A-22 Aft Fuselage Trainer (AFT). This dynamic operation and maintenance training mockup of the F/A-22 aft fuselage incorporates high fidelity replications of the engine bay components, formation lights, and associated components. The device is used to train and certify aircraft maintainers and technicians on the proper engine bay inspection and repair procedures.
F/A-22 Fuel Systems Trainer (FST). This dynamic operation and maintenance training mockup of the F/A-22 fuselage incorporates high fidelity replicated components to train and certify maintenance technicians on the proper inspection and repair procedures of the aircraft fuel system.
F/A-22 On-Structures Trainer (OST). This maintenance training mockup teaches maintenance technicians the proper repair processes and procedures involved in repairing and maintaining the panels on the aircraft. These tasks include panel trim-out, seal application, and installation and removal.
F/A-22 Full Mission Cockpit Trainer (FMT). The full mission trainer is a high fidelity functional cockpit simulator that is used to teach pilots in mission rehearsal and readiness training. The cockpits are linked so that a squadron can fly simulated missions simultaneously to rehearse missions in real time.
F/A-22 Egress Procedures Cockpit Trainer (EPT). The egress procedures trainer is a high fidelity mockup of the cockpit with a functional canopy and utilizes a high fidelity simulated Aces II ejection seat. The trainer is used to train pilots the proper cockpit egress procedures as well as seat and canopy removal and installation.
